A new Community Fridge in Dungiven has been launched at Glenshane Care Centre.
The trial initiative is supported by environmental charity Hubbub UK in a growing effort to tackle food waste. Spearheaded by individuals within the local community the venture is also backed by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Dungiven Library, and the town’s local supermarkets.
Offering her support, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Brenda Chivers said: “This is the second facility of its kind to open in the Causeway Coast and Glens and it is fantastic to see the community in Dungiven coming together in an effort to tackle the problem of food waste in such a positive and proactive way. The average household throws away £700 worth of food every year while at the same time so many people are living in food poverty. This innovative facility will enable residents and businesses to share surplus food and by working together this will greatly reduce needless waste.”
